How to optimize calculation speed and quality for point responses in complex room geometries?

To speed up point response calculations (Auditorium and Combined editions only), try making a calculation at one of the most critical positions, e.g. where coupled room effects are present.

  1. Set the calculation parameters in the Room Setup. Use the standard Engineering setup as a basis. Set the Impulse Response Length to a value between 2/3 and 1 times the expected Reverberation time or simply press the Quick Estimate button next to the Impulse response length in the Room Setup. You can also reduce the Impulse Response Resolution from the default 1 ms to 2 ms.
  2. Calculate the point response in the selected critical position.
  3. Inspect the results in the Single Point Response:
  • Is the T30 calculated at all frequencies? If not, it indicates that the Impulse Response Length is not long enough; change this in the Room Setup.
  • Compare EDT and T30. In simple, well-behaved rooms they should not differ very much; typically, EDT is a little shorter than T30. However, in the case of coupled volumes and no direct sight from the receiver to the source, EDT can be shorter than T30.
  • Inspect the decay curves; they should be as smooth as possible, without pronounced spikes. Press T to toggle between different displays (e.g. squared impulse response with the decay curve of a single octave band and decay curves for all octave bands).
  • Look at the Reflection Density; values between 30 and 100 reflections per ms should normally be sufficient. If it is less than approximately 30 reflections per ms, the number of rays should be increased.

If the quality of the results above is not satisfactory, increase the number of rays in the Room Setup: For example, doubling the number of rays shouldresult in twice the reflection density.
